Toronto, Ontario – May 18, 2026 – Afro Canadian Development Inc. is proud to announce the official launch of “EmpowerPlay 2026, a free 10-week youth basketball coaching” and mentorship program designed to support underserved, racialized, newcomer, immigrant, refugee, and low-income youth across the Greater Toronto Area. The initiative aims to provide young participants with access to structured basketball training, physical activity, mentorship, leadership development, teamwork, confidence building, and positive community engagement opportunities in a safe and inclusive environment.

EmpowerPlay 2026 is open to boys and girls between the ages of 10–14 years old and will take place every Saturday from June 27, 2026 to August 29, 2026, at Madonna Catholic Secondary School from 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM. The program is being organized as part of Afro Canadian Development Inc.’s ongoing commitment to youth empowerment, accessible recreation, community inclusion, and positive development opportunities for marginalized and vulnerable communities. Through weekly coaching sessions and team-based activities, participants will have opportunities to develop basketball fundamentals, improve physical fitness, strengthen communication and leadership skills, and build positive peer relationships through mentorship and community engagement.

To ensure the program reaches youth who may face financial and social barriers to sports participation, eligibility requirements include proof of Ontario residency, a valid Ontario Health Card, access to indoor sports shoes, and household income verification documentation. Priority consideration may be given to low-income families, newcomer families, refugees, racialized communities, and underserved youth. Due to limited program capacity, registration does not guarantee acceptance into the program. Parent or guardian consent is required for all participants under 18. Participants must follow all safety guidelines and maintain respectful conduct throughout the program.

“EmpowerPlay 2026 reflects our commitment to creating safe, accessible, and meaningful opportunities for youth through sports, mentorship, and community engagement. We believe programs like this help young people build confidence, leadership skills, healthy relationships, and stronger connections within their communities.”
